The University of Michigan is making great strides in reducing waste, expanding its award-winning recycling program, and purchasing products that minimize environmental impact.
One extremely successful campus recycling effort is the Stadium Recycling Program at U-M home football games. The program, a joint effort between U-M Waste Management Services and the Athletics Department, started in 1995 with the recycling of cardboard boxes from vendors at Michigan Stadium. Today, about one-quarter of all cardboard and beverage-container wastes from home football games are recycled.
In addition to recycling, the U-M supports numerous "green purchasing" efforts to minimize environmental impacts. Examples of green products include energy-efficient devices, products made from recycled materials, and products that can be reused or recycled.
