Campus Life

The University of Michigan campus housing system is the sixth largest among U.S. universities, lodging about 9,700 students in 16 residence halls. U-M Housing's sustainability efforts have grown and evolved over nearly two decades.

The program began modestly in the late 1980s with the collection of waste cardboard and newspapers from residence halls. Today, University Housing's sustainability program takes in more than half of all wastes (by volume) generated in the residence halls.

Residential Dining Services works with local farmers to bring fresh produce to the dining halls around campus. Michigan-grown and Michigan-made food products served in the dining halls include: soy organic tofu, Kellogg's cereals and fresh, state-grown fruits and vegetables: Michigan apples, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, to name a few.

Across campus, more than 20 student organizations help promote sustainable living at the University of Michigan. A new student group called the Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) helps to coordinate their efforts.
