The University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campuses are home to more than 480 major buildings on 3,071 acres. The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction department manages all design and construction activities for the University. The U-M Plant Operations division is responsible for maintaining the buildings and grounds and has spearheaded several energy-conservation initiatives, including the Planet Blue initiative discussed in this site's Energy and Resource Management section.
The U-M Plant Extension department provided support for the design and implementation of the ambitious Dana Building renovation project. The Dana Building is home to the School of Natural Resources and Environment. The aim of the "Greening of Dana" project, completed in 2004, was to provide a comfortable place to learn and work while demonstrating state-of-the-art, environmentally conscious design.
Other units, including the Plant Building and Grounds department and the Office of University Landscape Architecture, are responsible for developing and maintaining U-M's vibrant green spaces and preserves. U-M is not just about the maize and blue, but also the green.
